Reminder of Obligation to Protect Immigrant Families’ Rights to Access Public Education

All children in the United States, regardless of immigration or citizenship status, have a right to a free and appropriate public education. The California Department of Education (CDE) is sharing resources to help local educational agencies (LEAs) preserve access to education for students from immigrant families during times of increased fear of immigration enforcement.

Educators across California can benefit from reviewing resources that provide guidance on state laws protecting immigrant students and families. The Governor’s Office has issued a new web resource centralizing information about protecting immigrant families, including maintaining safe school environments and providing access to mental health resources: Governor’s Office Immigration Resources.

For more information and continuously updated resources, please visit the CDE’s Safe Havens web page: https://www.cde.ca.gov/eo/in/yr25cdoletter0121.asp
